Food Research and Action Center:
The House continues its spring recess this week, but action is expected to heat up next week when the House and Senate Budget Conferees sit down to resolve differences between the FY 2008 House and Senate-passed Budget Resolutions.
Action Needed: Anti-hunger advocates should use this period to weigh in with support for House provisions which include: a five-year (albeit "deficit-neutral" and as-yet unfinanced) reserve fund for the 2007 Farm Bill ($20 billion rather than $15 billion in the Senate resolution); a "Sense of the House Regarding the Need to Maintain and Build Upon Efforts to Fight Hunger" (not in the Senate resolution); and a higher domestic discretionary programs spending level ($417.8 billion, compared to $412.7 billion for the Senate and $392.5 billion for the President's budget).
Although House and Senate Budget Conferees have not been officially selected, all members of the Budget Committees should be contacted during this period.
Recess Period Plans: The congressional recess period (thru April 16) is just one opportunity to reach out to all Members of Congress (especially those on House and Senate Budget and Agriculture Committees), for local meetings and other forums to discuss anti-hunger priorities, including the 2007 Farm Bill reauthorization of the Food Stamp Program.
Sense of the House.---It is the sense of the House that the Department of Agriculture programs that help fight hunger should be maintained and that the House should seize opportunities to enhance those programs to reach people in need and to fight hunger."
