The goal of the child support enforcement program is to ensure that children receive financial and medical support from their parents. The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA) cut funds from the program, threatening to reverse the progress made in its effectiveness over the last 10 years.
H.R. 1386 and S. 803 would restore funds cut by the DRA. This fact sheet offers several reasons that Congress should restore funding.
The child support program collected more than $23 billion for 17 million children participating in the program.
The Congressional Research Service found that child support is one of the most important safety net programs reducing poverty rates for working families.
The DRA made deep cuts to federal child support enforcement funding.
