What do Kevin Bacon and the Nata Village H.I.V. blog in Botswana
have in common?
They're both part of a unique competition for cash and services that blends elements of "American Idol" with Sandhill Road-style venture capitalism and a healthy dose of philanthropic investment.
The NetSquared community--currently 3,000 registered users--will vote on the top 20, who will be brought to the NetSquared Conference on May 29 & 30, hosted by Cisco Systems in San Jose.
At the Conference, each project will be grilled by VCs, philanthropy experts, web developers and social activists.
The top three projects, as decided by a vote of the 350 Conference participants, will divide most of a $100,000 Technology Innovation Fund raised by TechSoup for the Conference.
Remaining funds will be split between the rest of the participating projects.
- The Nata Village blog: A unique opportunity to witness the battle to control the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nata, Botswana, a village of hope.
- Farmer 2 Farmer Learning: Farmers in developing countries can become more efficient and market oriented when they learn from experiences of themselves and their colleagues.
Voters must each cast at least 5 and up to 10 votes for separate projects for their votes to be tallied.
"It's pretty stressful," said Daniel Ben-Horin, TechSoup's Founder and President, who in 2006 conceived the first NetSquared--a more traditional conference also hosted by Cisco--with Marnie Webb, Vice President of Knowledge Services at TechSoup.
