From New York Times:
Susan V. Berresford, the president of the Ford Foundation since 1996, announced Friday that she would retire in January 2008, when she turned 65.
Her departure will be a milestone not only for the foundation, where she has worked for 36 years, but also for the philanthropic community.
"I know it is time for a new stage in my life, one that includes more time with my family," Ms.
A panel of the foundation's board will conduct a search to replace her.
Berresford's tenure as president, the foundation's assets grew to $11.4 billion from about $8 billion, enabling it to build programs to increase home ownership for low-income Americans, offer graduate fellowships for thousands of poor students around the world and, most recently, create an organization to underwrite individual artists.
Berresford has worked to support the nonprofit business community at large, and has had significant influence in the appointment of senior executives at the trade associations that represent charities and foundations.
She has been far more visible than many of her peers at other major foundations, often working one on one with the leaders of other foundations and of organizations that Ford supports.
