Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, has a love for science.
Holding a bachelor's, masters and Ph.D. in physics from Stanford, Dr. Ride is focused on promoting the importance of science education for the next generation of scientists.
Following President Bush's recent remarks on the importance of Aerospace Technology in our schools, Ride was featured in an article in USA Today emphasizing the need for studies in math and science as jobs requiring science and engineering training rise.
She is urging businesses to recognize the importance of both subjects for future careers and discusses the value of keeping kids interested in these studies.
Ride also speaks about the Toyota TAPESTRY program -- the largest grant program of its kind in the U.S. The program is awarding nearly $550,000 in grants this year for grades K-12 to assist science teachers in implementing projects in science areas.
The program provides 50 grants of up to $10,000 each, as well as mini-grants of $2,500 each to a minimum of 20 teachers.
The company has awarded more than $7 million since the program's inception in 1991.
