NOW ONLINE: THE FEDERAL ROLE IN EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT
National Priorities Project Database
The federal government provides critical support for each school district's efforts to educate its neediest children. The NPP Database now offers data and statistics on government funding for education at the school district level. To find your school district, go to the NPP Database.
With NPP's school district data (1996-2003), you can now:
Find the percentage of revenues that come from federal, state and local sources for each school district and the change over time;
Find the total amount of money for Title I (funding for disadvantaged children) and child nutrition programs that flow into your school district;
Get enrollment by race/ethnicity, eligibility for free and reduced price lunch, and the percentage of students receiving special education services;
Compare school districts with each other; and combine with other local numbers, such as county poverty rates.
We have provided an example below of the kind of data you can find on the NPP Database right now.
In 2003, in Wilcox County School District in Alabama, where 99.6% of enrolled students are black and 97% are eligible to receive free and reduced-price lunch:
Federal revenues received were $4.2 million. Roughly 44% of this money was for Title I programs to benefit at-risk students, and another 26% was for child nutrition programs.
Federal revenues made up 23.4% of all revenues received in the district, up from 16.7% in 2000.
Per pupil expenditures were $7,185 in 2003.
Get the numbers for your school district at the NPP Database. Please contact NPP's Database Manager Suzanne Smith with your questions or feedback.
Later in October the NPP Database will further expand to include numbers on military recruitment so that you can:
Find out how many young people were recruited into the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force in 2004;
Get recruitment breakdowns by state, county, school district, high school and zip code;
Get breakdowns by race/ethnicity and gender.
