U.S. Secretary of Education to Help at D.C.'s Ron H. Brown Middle School as Part of Community Service Project

From Education Newsfeed:

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Under Secretary Martha Kanter and more than 50 Department of Education employees and their families will participate in City Year’s service project in Washington D.C. at Ron H. Brown Middle School on Monday, Jan. 18. They will help beautify the school with painting and small construction jobs, as well as make blankets for a homeless shelter and create transitional housing kits.

Department employees will join more than 600 community and corporate volunteers, as they paint murals, build bookshelves, and reorganize books in the library on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to celebrate and honor his memory.

Founded in 1988, City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them valuable skills and opportunities. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England.
