Coalition on Human Needs:
We've sent every member of the House and Senate this statement in support of the President's budget priorities. It was signed by nearly 700 organizations, representing every state in the nation.
(See the statement: http://www.chn.org/pdf/2009/RRANStatementwithStates090324.pdf)*
Please join them by calling your Senators TODAY, toll-free at 1-866-544-7573!
Tell them: "Please vote to support President Obama's budget priorities, to set us on the path to create jobs, provide health care for all, and develop renewable energy. Please tell the Senate Budget Committee you oppose efforts to reduce appropriations in human needs programs such as education, housing, and child welfare services below the President's levels."
On Wednesday, March 25, the House and Senate Budget Committees will take up the federal budget. There are reports that they will reduce the amount available for non-defense appropriations. In the Senate, the Budget Committee is reported to be providing $15 billion less in FY 2010 for non-defense appropriations than the President proposed (that is, roughly $525 billion instead of the President's $540 billion). Please call your Senators to urge them to weigh in with the Budget Committee in support of adequate funding. (Or, if they serve on the Budget Committee, your call will urge them to vote for enough domestic spending to meet the growing needs. We don't yet know what the House Budget Committee will propose. When the budget proposals are released, we will send you the details.
