RAND Corporation and The Wallace Foundation today released the following advisory.
WHAT: Telephone news conference to release a new RAND Corporation report: "Revitalizing Arts Education Through Community-Wide Coordination," commissioned by The Wallace Foundation.
The No Child Left Behind Act's emphasis on standardized tests along with city budget crises have sharply reduced the time available during the school day for arts courses and the number of arts teaching positions.
The report evaluates six sites where public-private coordination has made it possible for more children to benefit from arts learning: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles County, New York City and Northern California (Alameda County.) Arts education has been found to enhance children's ability to "learn how to learn" and to develop skills of persistence and teamwork and improve the overall school experience, sustaining children's interest and enthusiasm for learning.
Because research links early arts exposure to participation later in life, arts education plays a vital role in ensuring America has a robust cultural life in the future.
The Wallace Foundation is an independent, national foundation dedicated to supporting and sharing effective ideas and practices that expand learning and enrichment opportunities for all people.
Its three current objectives are: strengthening education leadership to improve student achievement; improving out-of-school learning opportunities; and building appreciation and demand for the arts.
The Foundation maintains an online library of research reports and other publications that may be downloaded free of charge at: http://www.wallacefoundation.org.
We provide direct, immediate access to mainstream national media for 600 colleges, universities, medical centers, public-policy groups and other leading nonprofit organizations.
