Research Grants on African American Marriage and Health

Mathematica Policy Research:

MPR plans to fund up to six proposals at $10,000 per award. Proposals are due April 30, 2008. Graduate students may apply under the direction of someone who holds a doctoral degree.

A growing body of research evidence links marriage to a range of physical and mental health outcomes.

However, few studies have rigorously examined whether the relationship between marriage and health exists across racial and ethnic groups.

This omission is significant because the marriage patterns and health outcomes of African Americans often differ from those of other racial and ethnic groups.

To add to the research in this area, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has contracted with Mathematica to commission a series of research briefs examining the interaction between marriage and health in the African American community.

These analyses will increase our understanding of how marriage may be related to physical and mental health.

The causal pathways connecting marriage and chronic health conditions, especially cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including an examination of the link between marriage and behaviors that may affect these health conditions, such as exercise and eating habits.

The links between marriage and HIV/AIDS, with a particular focus on the role of marriage as 1) a protective/risk factor in exposure to HIV and 2) an influence on the health status among those living with HIV/AIDS.

The commissioned briefs should use secondary survey data, vital statistics, or other appropriate existing data sources to examine links between health and marriage within the African American community.

Priority may be given to briefs that focus on data collected specifically to address issues in the African American community, such as the National Survey of American Life (NSAL).
