From PR Newswire:
In recognition of November as National Adoption Month, Secretary of Public Welfare Estelle B. Richman today encouraged Pennsylvanians to consider opening their hearts and homes to any of the more than 900 children in foster care who are in need of a permanent adoptive family.
"In the past year, we have helped dreams come true for more than 1,900 Pennsylvania children as they finalized their adoptions and began a new life," Secretary Richman said.
"I encourage families to learn more about how they can experience the joy of adoption and make a lasting, positive change in the life of a child."
Working with the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network, the department works to find permanent homes for children with special needs, specifically those who are older, children with disabilities, as well as siblings wishing to be adopted together.
The network, known as SWAN, has helped to facilitate the adoption of more than 22,000 kids since it began 15 years ago.
Again this year, DPW and SWAN used the Pennsylvania Heart Gallery, a traveling photo exhibit featuring photographs and personal stories of children, to tell the story of just a few of the children currently waiting to be adopted.
The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) helps people meet their basic needs by providing health care and other critical support services for children, the elderly, people with chronic diseases, persons with disabilities and low income families and adults in Pennsylvania.
DPW is dedicated to promoting, improving, and sustaining the quality of family life; breaking the cycle of dependency while protecting and serving Pennsylvania's most vulnerable citizens.
