From Education Newsfeed: The U.S. Department of Education today launched a new Web site to provide teachers, administrators and other educators with recommendations on effective teaching practices and examples of possible ways to implement those practices to help promote excellence in American education and improve student achievement. The new "Doing What Works" site, http://dww.ed.gov, offers a user-friendly interface to quickly locate teaching practices that have been found effective by the department's research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences, and similar organizations. In addition, it cites examples of possible ways, although not necessarily the only ways, this research may be used to help students reach their academic potential. "Educators need to know what works, and this online library of resources will build a bridge from research to action," said U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. Seeing how it works---accessing examples of schools and classrooms engaged in those practices, including engaging videos. For instance, teachers interested in successful strategies for helping English language learners can watch a video of eight strategies that teachers at one school use to teach vocabulary. Lesson techniques, classroom scenes, student reactions, and graphic aids can all be viewed. Coming soon will be similar resources in such areas as early childhood education, high school reform, literacy, school restructuring, cognitive learning, and math and science. The Doing What Works site is led by the department's Office of Planning, Evaluation & Policy Development.. Assisting the project will be the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and Office of English Language Acquisition. Feedback is welcome with a special e-mail address set up to gather comments and answer questions.
