Columbia Business School has demonstrated significant leadership in integrating social and environmental issues into its MBA program, according to the Aspen Institute's 2007-2008 Beyond Grey Pinstripes ranking, announced today.
In this biennial survey of business schools, Columbia ranked sixth among the Global Top 100 Schools, which were evaluated on the breadth and depth of courses and activities that integrate social, environmental or ethical perspectives.
The Aspen Institute has highlighted a growing attention to issues concerning the complex relationship between business and society among educators and students at business schools around the world.
With a focus on social enterprise and business ethics, Columbia has established itself as a leader in this area: social and environmental issues are woven throughout its core curriculum, elective courses, extra-curricular activities and academic research.
The Social Enterprise Program - whose mission is "to inspire and prepare leaders who create social value in business, nonprofit and government organizations locally, nationally and internationally" - encompasses an array of elective courses in areas such as nonprofit and public sector management, corporate social responsibility, international development, emerging markets and social entrepreneurship.
The Aspen Institute Center for Business Education, a program of The Aspen Institute Business and Society Program, compiled Beyond Grey Pinstripes, its biennial research survey and alternative ranking of business schools, looking at how well social and environmental issues are incorporated into the training of future business leaders.
The school's cutting-edge curriculum bridges academic theory and practice, equipping students with an entrepreneurial mindset to recognize and capture opportunity in a competitive business environment.
