From PR Newswire:
Gov. Roy Romer, Chair of the Strong American Schools' "ED in '08" campaign, issued the following statement in response to the "Achievement Trap" report released today by The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation & Civic Enterprises:
"The 'Achievement Trap' report reveals what educators around the
country have long known to be true, that socio-economic challenges do not hinder intelligence or desire to learn, only opportunity. I saw this first hand as superintendent of Los Angeles Unified Public Schools.
"However, our schools are failing some of America's brightest students, with devastating consequences for their communities and our country.
The high-achieving youth in this report can be our norm, and should not be our exceptions.
Too many of these students are hindered by current education policy.
Our nation's schools must be places of opportunity, no matter one's social or economic background.
I look to our presidential candidates to offer leadership on this national issue, and describe how they plan work with state and local leaders to ensure that every student receives the K-12 educational opportunities they deserve."
The Strong American Schools' "ED in '08" campaign is funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.
The foundations have committed up to $60 million to support the campaign through November 2008.
